ektor garcia

Was born in Red Bluff, California in 1985, a child of migrant farm workers, he has lived and traveled frequently between the U.S. and Mexico. ektor received his BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Fiber and Material Studies in 2014, and an MFA from Columbia University New York City, NY in 2016. The work synthesizes an interest in queer culture and arts and crafts traditions with strong roots in Mexico. His works tend to be so elaborately installed and involuted that it is hard to say where things end or begin. Evocative of homemade altar, collection of ritual or fetish objects, garcia's environments feature artifacts fashioned from an amalgam of techniques including leather making, ceramics, sewing, welding, embroidery and collecting. He has had solo shows at Touché, a gay leather bar in Chicago, 2012, kurimanzutto, Mexico City, 2016, and Salon Acme, Mexico City, 2017.

PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR BFSP #02

The word text is in the word textile, I believe fabrics speak and have much to say. Textiles are but one facet of my material language. Textiles don’t stand the test of time, it is why I would like to cast them in bronze. The sculpture I am proposing is a life sized humanoid figure entirely composed of crochet fabric designed and hand crocheted by myself. The figure will be the half front of a body, just a skin made of textile curved and draped around the body full of holes which will be the negative spaces of the doilies. In the drawing the white lines are the crocheted material which will all hold the piece together. After the stiffened draped textile in the shape of the body is cast in bronze I would love to intervene and continue crocheting off of the holes around the edge of the back side of the piece, with leather and other materials, to echo and reference the materiality of the original textile. The height will be approximately 1.6 meters tall, the thickness of the crochet lines as thin as possible, I can work with the necessary thicknesses of ropes.
