PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR BFSP #02

FREQUENZE ASSOLUTE A MISURA D’ELSA DI SPADA
The Sword: milestone conquest of our Late Prehistory, very first device technically conceived for the sole purpose of eliminating human being in the fray of the battle. Instrument and symbol of one of the most peculiar propensity of human phenomenon: the intraspecific annihilation. A posthumous and parodic evocation of this powerful tool is here conceived in the form of an hybridization with a second device, just as absolute and obsolete, the Tuning Fork: instrument that produce a pure sound, practically devoid of overtones, a clean and stable source of constant elastic vibrations. The project intends to manufacture the Prototype of such an hybrid capable to “resonate at the pitch of a slash” and to eternize the sound produced, due to its widely invariable acoustic properties. The Prototype is meant to be casted according to the proportion of an iconic Bronze Age sword, modified by replacing the blade with two tuning fork prongs. The design process shall involve the specialized expertise of an archaeologist (to identify the best suited sword type and related alloy) and an acoustic physicist (to calculate the proportion of the prongs). The knowledge and manufacture skills of the Battaglia Foundry masters will synthesize the different contribution to produce the sculptural work.
